Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry (TPOM) is the first statewide ministry to offer programming for the incarcerated, those leaving prison, and the children of the incarcerated. Holistic services address spiritual, emotional, social, and economic needs of those impacted by incarceration. TPOM offers transitional housing, career/educational and vocational training, job placement, licensed mental health services, a 12 step program, case management, youth services, mentoring, and Christian worship services.
With a fifty-year history in prison outreach, the mission of TPOM is to bring the meaning of life to the lives of those who are incarcerated, and to successfully reunite those who are released with God, family and community. Last year alone, the ministry served more than 2,000 people behind bars. What started in 1963 as a two-person ministry has grown to involve more than 500 volunteers in ten of the fourteen state prisons and in 25 county jails.
In June of 2015, TPOM opened a Re-entry Center, where released offenders learn skills and strategies for successful reintegration into the community, and in 2017, TPOM opened a transitional house for men. In 2018, TPOM raised enough funds to begin construction in January 2019 for a transitional duplex for women leaving incarceration on donated property, next door to the reentry center.
*Although the recidivism rate (i.e., percentage who return to prison in three years) is 46%,
for those who participate in a faith-based programming the rate is about 20%.
*TPOM current recidivism rate of our graduates is 7%.
*By keeping one returning citizen from returning to prison, TPOM saved the taxpayer over $28,500 per year.
*Currently, the incarcerated from over 40 counties in Tennessee have applied for admission to TPOM re-entry center.
*TPOM has been able to place over 90% of our graduates in a job within ten days.
